THIRD-PARTY CHAT REQUESTS

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.18.6 update, we announced that WhatsApp was working on a feature to manage third-party chats. This feature is aimed at providing users with greater control over their interactions with external platforms within WhatsApp by allowing them to selectively manage which third-party apps can access and communicate through WhatsApp. Although no third-party apps can currently communicate with WhatsApp, it appears that WhatsApp is now focused on enhancing user control over potential requests from these apps. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.23.8 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a notification feature for third-party chat requests!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring a new section where European users can manage certain notifications from third-party apps, scheduled for release in a future update. This feature will allow users to choose whether to receive notifications when someone tries to message them from a new third-party app, giving them greater control over interactions initiated from external platforms. It is worth noting that users will have the flexibility to adjust this option at any time, enabling them to tailor their notification preferences as new apps become available or as their privacy needs change.

This update aligns with the EU regulations under Article 7, highlighting the importance of user control over data sharing preferences. Previously, WhatsApp had planned to always display notification requests from third-party apps by default. However, by introducing a setting that allows users to manage these notifications, we believe that WhatsApp will offer greater control and helps users reduce potential spam from notification requests by external platforms. It is also very important to note that users will be able to manage the general interoperability setting at any time, making it easier for them to adjust their communication preferences as needed.

A notification feature for third-party chat requests is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
