This feature will simplify the process of organizing contacts and group chats by allowing users to quickly assign them to personalized lists. Unlike previous implementations, we noticed that the shortcut will be accessible directly from the top app bar within conversations, making it easier for users to manage their contacts without needing to navigate to the chat info screen or settings. It seems WhatsApp is currently focused on further improving this feature, enhancing its usability and ensuring it won't cause inconvenience. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.21.37 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature to limit the number of lists!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature to limit the number of lists users can create, scheduled for release in a future update. Previously, during the development of this feature, WhatsApp had not included any restrictions on the number of lists users could create. This meant that users were theoretically able to generate an unlimited number of lists for organizing their contacts and group chats. However, with the recent update, WhatsApp is introducing a limit that will cap the number of lists at 20. It is important to note that this limit might change before the official release as WhatsApp continues to refine the feature during development and determine the most suitable configuration.

The decision to add a limit to the number of lists suggests that WhatsApp carefully considered how users might experiment with the feature and the potential challenges that could arise from managing too many lists. Limiting the number to 20 likely strikes a balance between providing enough flexibility for users to organize their chats better while preventing an overload of lists, which could become difficult to manage.

One of the reasons WhatsApp might have opted for this limit is the way lists interact with the user interface. Each time a list is created, a corresponding filter appears within the chats tab, allowing users to quickly view conversations associated with that list. While this is a convenient way to manage different groups or categories of chats, having too many filters could clutter the interface, making it more difficult to navigate and less user-friendly. By implementing a cap, we believe that WhatsApp likely aims to encourage users to be more intentional about which lists they create and maintain. Instead of creating an excessive number of lists that may not all be necessary, users will need to think carefully about which contacts or group chats are important enough to group together. This will also prevent users from becoming overwhelmed by an excessive number of filters and helps maintain a cleaner and more organized experience for the chats tab.
