This feature will notify users about status updates they haven't yet viewed, ensuring they don't miss important updates from their contacts. It appears that WhatsApp is continuously refining its notification system to improve user engagement, while keeping users informed about how muting conversations works. As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring a new option to clearly manage the notification activity for group chats, scheduled for release in a future update. This feature will allow users to choose between receiving notifications for all group messages or only those that are directly relevant to them, such as mentions, replies, and other important interactions. Although this is the current behavior, WhatsApp plans to clarify how muting group chats impacts notification settings through this new notification activity screen in the future.

Users will be able to adjust this setting based on their preferences within the new notification activity screen for specific group chats in a future update. The screenshot also indicates that the default setting between these two options is determined by the group size. This means that when notifications are automatically muted to help users reduce alerts from large group chats, the default selection will prioritize relevant interactions.

It is important to note that when notifications for group chats are muted, WhatsApp currently sends alerts for specific interactions, such as replies to their messages and mentions. However, many users may not understand why they continue to receive notifications for certain messages, even after muting a group. As a result, some users may be confused when they receive specific alerts from muted groups. This new feature will make it clearer and more intuitive how muting groups works by explicitly highlighting the option to receive notifications only for relevant interactions. This will provide transparency and control, helping users better understand how group notifications work even when their group chats are muted.

A clearer notification activity feature for group chats is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
