AR CALL EFFECTS AND FILTERS
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.12.14 update, we announced that WhatsApp was working on a new interface for the bottom calling bar. Through this enhancement, WhatsApp aims to modernize and enhance the calling experience on Android devices. The updated interface for the calling screen introduces a more contemporary design, featuring a larger profile photo and improved visual clarity for the bottom calling bar, making it easier for users to identify and interact with contacts during calls. It appears that WhatsApp is now committed to introducing additional useful features, designed to enhance the overall calling experience. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.13.14 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on an Augmented Reality feature to introduce call effects and filters!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of new AR call effects and filters, scheduled for release in a future update of the app. These AR effects will allow users to add fun and interactive elements to their video calls while also enhancing the overall visual experience. Users will be able to personalize their calls by enabling dynamic facial filters, such as a touch-up tool for smoothing skin appearance, and a low-light mode to improve visibility in dim environments.
Additionally, WhatsApp is developing a tool to edit the background during calls, which will be particularly useful for group conferences where users may want to customize their surroundings or blur out distractions. It is worth nothing that this calling background feature will also be available on Desktop apps in the future, where the larger screen and enhanced editing capabilities may make it even more useful for users managing professional or detailed background adjustments during calls.
Alongside these features, WhatsApp is also planning to introduce other effects that can make video calls more entertaining and engaging, catering to users who enjoy adding a playful touch to their conversations. Specifically, users will soon have the option to use an avatar in place of their real-time video feed, providing creative expression options during calls. This feature proves beneficial by allowing users to maintain anonymity or express themselves creatively through avatars, ensuring privacy or enhancing the fun element of video calls.
An AR feature for call effects and filters is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
