HIDDEN COMMUNITY GROUP CHATS

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.9.27 update, we announced that WhatsApp was working on a feature to hide groups in communities. Through this enhancement, WhatsApp aims to offer users greater privacy and control over their group memberships within community settings, by allowing them to hide specific groups from the community group chat list in the future. Although this is still in development, it appears that WhatsApp is currently in the process of further improving this feature by implementing the ability to understand which community group chats are hidden, as discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.10.13 update from the Google Play Store.

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring a new feature to mark community group chats as hidden by using a dedicated icon next to the group name, set for release in a future update of the app. Through this icon, community members who are part of the hidden group chat will be able to quickly identify that it is hidden from the main community view, allowing them to keep certain group activities discreet without losing track of the hidden group chat's existence in the future. In addition, WhatsApp will highlight which community a hidden group chat belongs to, directly on the chat info screen.

In our opinion, this icon-based approach will provide a simple and intuitive way to distinguish hidden group chats from visible ones. This added layer of privacy will allow users to engage in certain community group chats without revealing their participation to others in the community, as they cannot see which groups are hidden without a group invite link. With this extra level of confidentiality, users will be able to customize their community group lists to focus on the chats that are most relevant to them, while keeping other group activities discreet. It's expected that this feature will also help community moderators manage group visibility and organization more effectively. By allowing certain groups to be hidden, we believe that moderators will be able to enhance community privacy, keeping sensitive or exclusive groups away from the general view.

A feature to hide community group chats is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app. We will share another article once we've gathered additional information about this feature.
