AUTO MUTE LARGE GROUP CHATS

In June, WhatsApp introduced larger groups up to 512 participants to all iOS and Android users and another improvement has unexpectedly been released two weeks ago: up to 1024 participants can join groups, a feature available to some lucky users. Even if it is already possible to mute groups in order to stop continuously receiving notifications, we have discovered that WhatsApp is now developing a feature that will automatically mute large groups to help immediately reduce notifications in the future!

As you can see in this screenshot, there is a message that informs the user that joins the group that it will be automatically muted when it has more than 512 participants. You can obviously unmute it if you still wish to receive notifications from large groups but this automatic action is useful because it may save you some time. However, since this feature is under development it is still not clear if WhatsApp automatically mutes large groups when users join large groups or if the changes also take effect at the exact moment when they reach 512 participants: probably both, but only time will tell.

The ability to automatically mute large group chats is a feature under development and it will be rolled out to some beta testers in a future update. As always, an announcement on this website and Twitter will be available when the feature is finally available.
