WhatsApp is announcing new updates that bring the app closer to how people use their devices. The updates cover iPad signup, a refreshed car experience, PDF support, and music sharing to Status. These features make WhatsApp more useful where it did not work as well before.

WhatsApp is now promoting usernames with a dedicated banner on the App Store and Google Play. This is the first time that WhatsApp features usernames as a major update directly on the stores. This may indicate that a wider release is finally getting closer, although WhatsApp says the feature will become available to everyone over the coming months.

WhatsApp is adding a special animation to status updates on iOS and Android to celebrate the FIFA World Cup 2026. The feature shows footballs on the interface when someone likes an update. The animation is temporary and will disappear once the tournament ends.

After the initial reservation phase, some users can finally communicate with new people and businesses using their username. WhatsApp is now notifying them that their reserved username is ready. For the first time, users can choose to share their username instead of their phone number with new contacts.
