MESSAGE SUMMARIZATION

Last week, we shared an article regarding Private Processing, a secure technology that will enable advanced AI-powered features while fully preserving user privacy. This new architecture ensures that no one, not even Meta or WhatsApp, can access users' private requests, including messages. Built with privacy by design, Private Processing will use encrypted connections, secure environments, anonymous credentials, and verified client requests to ensure user requests and messages stay confidential at every step. Although Private Processing is still in development, WhatsApp is currently focused on refining those features that will leverage this secure technology in the future. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.15.12 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature to privately summarize messages in chats, groups, and channels!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature that will allow users to get private summaries of new messages they've received, scheduled for release in a future update. Specifically, when users receive a certain number of new messages in any conversation, a dedicated button with a prompt to summarize new messages using Meta AI will be displayed, allowing users to quickly catch up on the conversation. If the user chooses to summarize the messages, a private request will be generated and securely processed by the Private Processing infrastructure.

Private Processing will ensure that the message content is handled entirely within a protected environment, with no exposure to WhatsApp, Meta, or any third parties. The summary is then returned to the device securely, without storing or retaining any of the original messages. This feature will especially be helpful for those who are part of active group chats or follow many channels and often find it hard to keep up with new information, as it provides a convenient way to stay updated without compromising end-to-end encryption. Thanks to Meta AI and Private Processing, users will be able to regain context with a single tap, all while maintaining full privacy for their messages.

This optional functionality will show a private summary of new messages in chats, groups, and channels, making it easier for users to catch up quickly without having to read through each individual message. However, despite the strong privacy guarantees provided by Private Processing, and even though many of its components will be made open source for security researchers, this summarization feature will not be available in chats where Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled. This decision is not based on any doubts about the secure ability for Private Processing to protect requests and messages, but instead respects the preferences of users who have chosen not to use AI features in certain conversations.

A feature to privately summarize messages in chats, groups, and channels is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
