As reported by a tweet in the WABetaInfo Twitter account some weeks ago, WhatsApp is going to use Facebook servers to manage the connection.
Sources told to CNBC that “Facebook is planning to move WhatsApp off IBM’s public cloud”, that means the old infastructure will be completely abandoned.
RUMOR:
WhatsApp will use the Facebook infrastructure in future: this means that WA will use (also?) FB servers to manage the connection.— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) May 24, 2017
Acquired by Facebook in 2014, WhatsApp was still hosted on IBM’s servers, but the transition to Facebook servers may start at the end of this year, CNBC reports, saving $2 million a month that WhatsApp pays to IBM.
Nothing will change for WhatsApp users in terms of personal privacy and WhatsApp will continue to work as before (and maybe, better).
